Would you be interested in supporting a teacher in need?

One in twenty teachers across America suffer from an ongoing mental illness and one in five in Australia has been diagnosed with depression. So we’re putting the call out to ask,
would you be interested in learning about how you can be a part of our sponsor a teacher program?

Yes - I would like to support a teacher!

The Problem:

Teachers are more susceptible to work-related stress, burnout and general psychological distress when compared to other occupations (source).

Over 50% of Australian teachers suffer from anxiety and nearly one-fifth, from depression. The mental health and wellbeing of teachers’ is extremely important, not only because of the detrimental effect on teachers’ themselves but also the direct impact on the students’ experiences in a classroom.

The main sources that affect the mental health of teachers,’ includes excessive workload, time pressure and behavioural challenges with students, management of bullying and reactive management strategies and difficulties with colleagues and parents.

In psychology, priming is a technique in which the introduction of one stimulus influences how people respond to a subsequent stimulus. Priming works by activating an association or representation in memory just before another stimulus or task is introduced. This phenomenon occurs without our conscious awareness, yet it can have a major impact on numerous aspects of our everyday lives.

When people experience positive emotions, their minds broaden, and they open to new possibilities and ideas. At the same time, positive emotions help people build their personal well-being resources, ranging from physical resources to intellectual resources, and social resources (Fredrickson 2009).

“Attending to the mental health of teachers should be paramount. They are at the forefront of the education system and vital to supporting student success.”

– Peta Stapleton

Priming is related to implicit memory, also called automatic memory or unconscious memory. Priming takes advantage of this form of memory by using exposure to certain stimuli, like related words and images, to change subconscious associations.

Positive priming speeds up your reaction time by improving your memory processes.

Studies have shown that people primed with words related to ‘success’ subsequently perform much better on intelligence tasks.

Priming is known to improve cognitive and behavioral response times. In addition, it can decrease anxiety, stress, and depression. It can even be a strong study aid.
